Special Initiatives

Deadlines

Short Drama Initiative 5pm, 2 February 2009
This program recognises the value of short film production as a stepping stone for practitioners towards the development and eventual production of longer form projects. It aims to provide the opportunity for talented individuals in collaborative teams to develop their craft and expand their credits through the production of a short film.
Creative Producer Scheme
This program is intended to give Tasmanian producers the skills to produce content of an international standard that is competitive in the marketplace.  It is expected that by the end of the third year each producer will have advanced at least one major project into production. Funding is available for emerging Tasmanian producers to develop a slate of projects including: feature film; television drama; documentary; animation; digital media projects.
Headlands  TBA

Headlands is an intensive 10 week documentary research and writing development initiative from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) through its Documentary Department in partnership with Screen Tasmania and other state and federal agencies. The program focuses on supporting selected applicants through the intensive process of research and development of a high concept documentary feature, series, multi-media or one-off program that requires extensive research. Individual applicants or teams of two may apply.

Previous Special Initiatives 

AFTRS Locations Survey Management Course

In partnership with Screen Tasmania, the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) ran a Locations Survey Management Course in Hobart from 28-31 July 2008. Conducted by respected Locations Manager, Phillip Roope (Australia, Superman Returns and Lantana), the course took nine students through the process of scouting, surveying, recording locations and assessing them for feasibility of filming.  Practitioners who successfully completed this course will be favourably considered as potential Location Scouts for Screen Tasmania.

Business of Development National Conference

Seventy Australian film and television industry representatives descended on Hobart from 21-23 July 2008 to address the issue of script development as part of the joint Screen Tasmania and Arista Business of Development National Conference.

The conference was designed for producers, directors, writers, script editors, assessors and development executives and stands as the first of its kind in Australia.

Presented by world-renowned script developer Stephen Cleary, the three days focussed on the skill of storytelling and the methods, techniques and practices that are required to turn a good script into a great film.

Arista Freycinet Residential

Screen Tasmania hosted the internationally renowned Arista script development residential workshop, at Freycinet Lodge from Sunday 13 to Saturday 19 July 2008. Twenty-nine participants took part in a series of intensive workshops over the week.

LAMP
 

Facilitated by the Australian Film TV and Radio School (AFTRS) in Sydney, LAMP has reached thousands of media professionals, run hundreds of workshops, seminars and live-in-residentials and developed over 54 projects. Project teams create proof of concepts, engaging presentations and evolve the business, technical and creative aspects of their property, leading to pilots, user testing and participatory audiences.

Arista 2007 Hobart Workshops  

In October 2007, Screen Tasmania hosted a series of workshops by the internationally acclaimed Arista to help Tasmanian practitioners further develop their script and craft skills, and assist in developing their stories to advance them into production.

Destination Australia  

An innovative documentary funding initiative, developed by SBSi in association with Screen Tasmania and other state funding bodies, that provides professional development opportunities for Tasmanian documentary filmmakers.

Short Fuse
A program of short courses in scriptwriting, producing and directing run by experienced AFTRS lecturers, the aim of this initiative is to provide young Tasmanian filmmakers with a crash-course in short drama production. Additionally, production funding of $10,000 will be provided for three teams to shoot and produce their own film.
